Overview

Aligning and straightening your teeth with orthodontics can improve not only the appearance of your smile but your bite and the overall health of your mouth. Traditional metal braces are an effective, time-tested method for the correction of many orthodontic complications and are safe for use on adults, teenagers, and children. Due to advances in the dental industry, traditional metal braces have come a very long way and are now made of lightweight materials and wires that are customized to your individual needs. Our team, led by Dr. Eric Capps at Made Ya Smile Dental, will tailor your orthodontic care to meet your individual needs. Traditional metal braces will reposition your teeth and correct your bite to address both aesthetic and functional concerns. Our practice makes this process fun for children and teens by allowing the patients to choose from a wide range of colored elastics, which will be changed in intervals of around two months during your treatment. For more information about our orthodontic options and the benefits of traditional metal braces, contact our Rosenberg, TX facility today.

Best Candidates

Metal braces work by moving the teeth using a series of brackets, wires, and elastic bands. The orthodontics work together, applying force to gently move the teeth into a new, proper place within your mouth. Made Ya Smile Dental creates a unique treatment plan for each individual, prioritizing their needs and lifestyle and using our best efforts to provide outstanding results while allowing you to speak and eat comfortably during treatment. Our traditional metal braces are comprised of top-quality materials that are changed out during the course of treatment to reach each step in the process. Ideal candidates for traditional metal braces can include any child, teen, or adult with orthodontic concerns. You may or may not qualify for alternative options like Invisalign®, or perhaps you have an open bite, crossbite, underbite, or overbite that requires more comprehensive treatment. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Eric Capps if you believe you are ready to begin orthodontic care. Our skilled team in Rosenberg, TX is ready to help you achieve your best possible smile.

What to Expect

To determine what type of orthodontics would best meet your needs, your consultation will begin with digital x-rays and 3D imaging of your teeth, jaw, and head. We may also take impressions of your mouth. Dr. Capps and the Made Ya Smile Dental team will use this information to understand your specific needs and create a treatment plan for your care. After discussing your options and explaining your needs, we will schedule your appointment for the placement of your braces!

At this exciting visit, we will first clean your teeth, preparing the surfaces for brackets. We will then attach the brackets onto the surfaces of your teeth with a clear bonding agent. Your treatment may include top only, bottom only, or top and bottom brackets. After the brackets are securely in places, high-quality metal wires will be threaded into the brackets. The strength and size of the wire will vary throughout your treatment according to what is being addressed. Once the wires are in place, your colored elastics will be placed over the wires and latched onto the bracket, holding everything in place. You will attend appointments in two-month intervals throughout your treatment. At these visits, our team will monitor your progress, clean your brackets, change your archwires, and switch out your elastics.

Follow-Up

It is not uncommon to experience mild soreness in your jaw and teeth for a few days following the initial placement of your braces and the changing of your archwires. Eating soft foods and taking anti-inflammatory medications for a couple of days with help control the discomfort as your mouth adjusts. The wires, bands, and brackets in your mouth will naturally collect food and plaque during your treatment so oral hygiene is more important than ever. A member of our team will show you how to carefully and meticulously clean your teeth and brackets throughout the day and after meals to protect your teeth against decay. Dr. Capps and our team may recommend or provide special flossing products and dental wax to help you protect your teeth and mouth during your treatment. It is important to continue to attend your bi-annual cleanings during the course of your orthodontic care.

Most patients can expect to wear their braces for about 1 – 3 years, while specific times vary from patient to patient. Your progress will be closely monitored throughout the course of your care. The Made Ya Smile Dental team will use their best efforts to help you understand how much time remains in your treatment plan. As your teeth reach the desired placement, you will have all of the parts of your braces removed and you will be fitted for a retainer. Your retainer will help keep your teeth in their new place in the future.

Emergencies

Part of orthodontic care can mean dealing with unforeseen situations involving your braces that could arise at inconvenient times. We will do our best to prepare you for potential complications and show you how to cope until you can get into our office for a visit. To avoid potential complications, we encourage you to avoid hard and/or sticky foods and carefully care for your mouth during high-impact activities. Contact our office if you have any concerns about your braces but in the meantime, here are a few tips and tricks for:

A loose wire or appliance If a wire becomes loose, simply guide it back into place using tweezers, a Q-tip, or a pencil eraser. If you are not able to guide it back into place, cover the exposed ends with sugar-free gum or orthodontic wax until you are able to get in for a visit. When a dental appliance becomes loose, it should be held in place with dental wax, and you should contact our office ASAP to be scheduled quickly.
A loose bracket or band
If a band or bracket becomes loose but remains attached to the wire, it can be left where it is until your next visit. You should use orthodontic wax or sugar-free gum to keep it in place and prevent any irritation or discomfort.
Tooth or jaw pain Discomfort and soreness in the teeth and jaw is normal during the course of your treatment with metal braces and can be treated with nonprescription medications such as Ibuprofen. However, severe or sharp pain in the jaw and or teeth should be reported to our facility so that an appointment can be scheduled.
Poking or sharp archwires
Wires can sometimes break or come loose, causing irritation and pain for your tongue, cheeks, lips, and/or gums. Contact our team for a visit after using orthodontic wax or sugar-free gum to cover the exposed end of the wire. You may also clip the wire, using fingernail or wire clippers, just behind the tooth near the bracket it should be attached to.
